Garlic on Greenacre:

Well we planted Garlic last Autumn - It's now harvested and we got a really good return. The cold weather last winter didn't affect it at all, it's actually an advantage, they require a certain amount of time below zero to help with bulb production. I must say that this is a simple & great addition to any Garden, please have a go.
Here is what we did:
How much to plant? - Well we are a family of 5 & do use a lot so we bought 2KG of bulbs, which you split and plant out the cloves individually. There are 6 to 8 Cloves per bulb and 13 - 18 bulbs per KG, conservative estimate of 156 cloves. Over 52 weeks of a year averages 3 bulbs per week.
Variety: Vallelado (Organic)
Spacing: 4" Centres
Total Square Footage: 30 Sq Ft
Expected Return on Harvest:
156 Bulbs
Beginners Yield on 30sqft - 20lbs/9kg
Intermediate Yield on 30sq ft - 40lbs/18kg We got 18.5kg
Expert Yield on 30 Sq ft - 80lbs/36kg
Actual Return on Harvest for 2010: We got 18.5kg
Okay what to do with your Garlic other than the norm:
I have small kids, this means a lot of colds and sniffels. Garlic in my house is regularly made into soup. Not a small ingredient but actual Garlic soup roughly 4 cloves per person (I have been known to use 6 pp) - NB You do NOT under any circumstance want to meet anyone outside of your own family the following day, you won't get a warm reception.
Why this works - The active sulpher compounds that are antibacterial & antiviral are released by the body through the skin but also by the lungs, which puts the compounds in a perfect position to attack infections. (Normal disclamer - I'm not a doctor, always seek their advice).
A couple of our bulbs "blew", these you just use straight away. They can sometimes burst or "blow" if they are harvested too late. See pictures below:

I Braid & hang our Garlic to store I will pop up a post about how to braid these at a later stage.
Where to get this Garlic for planting: We get ours from Fruit Hill Farm & have always had a good return from our Garlic/Onion/potato's see www.fruithillfarm.com for more information. They deliver to your door.
