In The Vegetable Plot:

Sow the following Under Cover :

Cucumbers, Melons, Okra, Sweet & Chilli Peppers, Tomatoes, & Sweetcorn.

 

Sow out in the open:

Beans (Broad, French & Runner), Beetroot, Broccoli (sprouting), Cabbage (summer, autumn & winter), Calabrese, Carrots, Cauliflowers (winter/spring), Chicory, Corn Salad, Endive, Fennel, Kales, Kohl, Rabi, Lettuce, Onions (pickling & scallions), Peas, Radish, Spinach, Swedes,Swiss Chard, Turnip

 

Use you judgement to decide if it's warm enough to plant the following out in the open - Cucumbers, Marrows, Pumpkins, Squash (winter), Sweetcorn

 

Transplant &/Or Plant out the following:

Aubergines, celery, cucumbers, marrows, peppers, tomatoes.

French & Runner beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, lettuce, maincrop potatoes.

 

Harvest:

Autumn Sown Broad Beans, Beetroot (late May), Cabbage Spring, Early Carrots (don't be afraid to use your thinnings too), Spring Onions (Scallions),Radish, Spinach Beet, Swiss Chard.

 

Jobs to do:

Harden off seedlings.

Protect seedbed against birds

Take protective measures against all fly attacks (carrot fly is a real problem around this time). As well as those pretty butterflies.

Weed, Hoe & Mulch where you can.

Earth up your Early Potatoes (If needed).

Ventilate your strawberries (allows for pollination & reduces the risk of Disease)

Side shoot the tomato plants & support Pea plants.

Finish any pruning that is left & where you can.

 

Fun to do:

Make a scarecrow - It dosen't have to be a Scarecrow man try a woman or a kid or if you have kids why not make a scarecrow family???

 

Be careful to check any bought or gift plants for signs of pest or diseases before you introduce them to your garden (prevention rather than cure)
