An heirloom variety dating back to 1855 and one of our most popular lettuces. Compact with wrinkled green leaves which have an attractive brownish tinge. Cold hardy for year round use.


SITE & SOIL: a site that will not get too hot (semi-shade if necessary). Soil should not be too rich and have a pH of about 6.5.
SOW: spring for summer use or autumn for winter use. Sow thinly in drills 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart. Seed will not germinate above 18°C.
PLANTING: thin to 15cm then to 30cm apart.
HARVEST: in summer or winter.


Tip: although early or late watering is better for your veg, lettuce is one of the few crops that will thank you for a midday watering in summer. Remember to shade a 30 percent shade cover is ideal. (a must have if your midday watering )
